ST. LOUIS (April 5, 2016) – The Doe Run Company’s (Doe Run) Brushy Creek Mine and Mill near Boss, Missouri, has become the company’s third mine and mill operation to earn certification from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The certification recognizes Brushy Creek Mine and Mill for implementing an environmental management system that meets the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems requirements with the goal of enhancing environmental performance.

“This third-party certification audit supports and confirms Doe Run’s focus on meeting our environmental commitments,” said Mark Yingling, vice president – environmental, health and safety at Doe Run. “Pursuing certifications enhances our programs by bringing an outside expert’s perspective to help us audit and evaluate our techniques, discuss new practices, and work toward continuous improvement where appropriate.”

Brushy Creek Mine and Mill achieved ISO certification over a six-month period, which included a rigorous on-site assessment from a third-party ISO registrar to refine the site’s procedures and enhance environmental performance. As part of ISO certification, Brushy Creek Mine and Mill established specific targets for improvement, which include:

  • Increase materials recycling by 5 percent;
  • Reduce hazardous waste by 5 percent;
  • Construct a water treatment plant, which was completed in 2014; and
  • Complete geothermal heating project for the site.

Doe Run plans to complete quarterly assessments and annual registrar checks to maintain certification. These ongoing audits validate that new processes are maintained to meet the site’s established targets.

“Achieving ISO certification requires collaboration across the organization to uncover the areas where we have opportunity to improve environmental performance processes,” said Samantha Anderson, an environmental programs manager at Doe Run who oversaw the certification process. “We learned many best practices from our previous ISO experiences, so we were able to improve procedures more quickly at Brushy Creek Mine and Mill. By standardizing many of our environmental processes, we have been able to operate more efficiently.”

Doe Run’s Sweetwater Mine and Mill and Fletcher Mine and Mill also have achieved ISO certification. The company is now pursuing certification to support continuous improvement of its environmental management systems at Buick Mine and Mill.
