ST. LOUIS (November 10, 2022) – As many university students plan for their Thanksgiving break, a single parent of three has made her return to the classroom to pursue a master’s degree in nursing. Marlenea Coombs, licensed practical nurse, is a proud recipient of The Doe Run Company (Doe Run) Nursing Scholarship Fund at Southwest Baptist University. She began her RN bridge program this semester.
“These scholarship opportunities help our community’s wellbeing by ensuring we have expert health care professionals available, as well as supporting individuals in pursuing their personal goals,” said Jan Lott, vice president – human resources at Doe Run. “When a mom continues her education, she is demonstrating to her children that growth is always possible, and one should never stop learning.”
Over the past 10 years, Doe Run has invested in its surrounding communities with over $1.9 million in scholarships, tuition reimbursement and donations. In addition to sponsoring scholarships for students attending Southwest Baptist, Mineral Area College, Missouri University of Science and Technology, and Southwest Baptist University Salem Campus, the company has funded technology and other programs that support elementary, middle and high school STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) curriculum for local school districts.
“Do not wait,” said Marlenea Coombs, scholarship recipient and Cherryville resident. “Nursing has changed my family’s life for the better. I am raising my kids in a different lifestyle than I was raised in.”
