ST. LOUIS (April 12, 2021) – The Doe Run Company (Doe Run) is offering three full scholarships to the Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) 2021 Virtual Explosives Camp taking place this summer. High school students will get the chance to learn about the safe handling and shooting of explosives and how explosives are used in different industries. The deadline to apply for the Doe Run scholarship is May 1.

“To keep our students and faculty safe from the spread of COVID-19, Missouri S&T has opted for virtual camps this summer,” said Dr. Paul Worsey, professor and director of explosives education at Missouri S&T. “This year’s Virtual Explosives Camp will be open to more participants and can be easily accessed online from the comfort of home.”

Interested high school students must apply for the Virtual Explosives Camp online, then submit the Doe Run scholarship application by May 1. Doe Run’s scholarships cover the full $300 camp cost and are available to students who will be in high school in Fall 2021 at the following districts: Potosi R-3 District; Kingston K-14 District; Iron County C-4 District; Bunker R-3 District; Valley R-VI District; Salem R-80 District; Southern Reynolds Co. R-II District; Farmington R-7; Steelville R-III; and St. Francois School Districts – West County R-4, Central R-3, North R-1, and Lesterville R-IV. Interested students can obtain a scholarship application from their high school principal or guidance counselor’s office. Scholarship recipients will be notified by June 1.

“The proper and safe use of explosives is critical in the mining industry, and the Virtual Explosives Camp gives students some insight into the type of work we do every day,” said Brian Mangogna, general manager, Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO) at Doe Run. “Learning opportunities like this might be what sparks a student’s interest in a future career in mining or engineering.”

The camp includes an introduction to the Missouri S&T Explosives Program, careers in explosives, explosives blasting in mining, display fireworks, pyrotechnics, demonstrations of high-speed cameras and explosions, and using a huge black powder cannon for impact research. Students will have projects to complete, including going to see a fireworks display over the July 4th holiday.

The 2021 Virtual Explosives Camp will be held for three consecutive hours online on June 28, June 30, July 7 and July 9. Exact times will be shared later. Learn more about the Virtual Explosives Camp here. Apply for Doe Run’s scholarship here.
