The Doe Run Company (Doe Run) has donated a building in Viburnum, Missouri, to Missouri Highlands Health Care. This facility will expand health-related services to the communities in Iron and neighboring counties. Formerly used as a bowling alley, the 11,920 square-foot building has an appraised value of $238,000.

“We are thrilled by Doe Run’s donation, and we look forward to providing the highest and best use of the space to benefit the communities we serve,” stated Karen White, chief executive officer of Missouri Highlands Health Care. “Residents in the area often have to drive long distances to find the health treatment they need. This building will allow us to expand our services, perhaps provide dental and add additional mental health care, and increase access for residents in the seven-county area Missouri Highlands serves.”

Missouri Highlands is currently reaching out to community members through a steering committee to identify community needs and priorities for the building. In addition to relocating existing medical clinic and behavioral health services to the new building, Missouri Highlands is considering dental services, substance abuse treatment and wellness education among other ideas.

“We expect to finalize our plans for the building over the next six months, including obtaining architectural design estimates before we move into a fundraising campaign to help offset renovation costs,” White added.

“It was clear to Doe Run that this building should have a new purpose,” stated Steve Batts, vice president – Southeast Missouri Operations at Doe Run. “We quickly understood that providing expanded access to health and wellness services was not only important for Viburnum, but also for those in neighboring small towns. By locating more services in Viburnum, community members will be able to access doctors closer to home. We are eager to see how Missouri Highlands reinvents the space.”
