Second Doe Run Mine and Mill Achieves Internationally Recognized Standard

ST. LOUIS (June 7, 2015) – Fletcher Mine and Mill has become the second mine and mill operation of The Doe Run Company (Doe Run) to earn certification for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 Environmental Management Systems standard. The certification recognizes Fletcher Mine and Mill for implementing an environmental management system that meets ISO 14001 requirements, including demonstrating continual improvement in managing its environmental programs.

Sweetwater was the first mine and mill to achieve ISO 14001 certification in 2014, and Doe Run’s Resource Recycling facility in Boss, Missouri, also holds the certification.

“It’s important to measure ourselves against a rigorous, internationally recognized standard like ISO to ensure we’re doing all we can to meet our commitment to operate responsibly,” said Mark Yingling, vice president – environmental, health and safety at Doe Run. “The systematic process to gain certification provides us with an opportunity to review and enhance our existing efforts toward continuous improvement and environmental performance.”

Fletcher Mine and Mill established specific targets for improvement as part of the certification.

“Our targets include a 5 percent increase in materials recycling, and construction of a water treatment plant,” said Samantha Anderson, a Doe Run environmental analyst who oversaw the certification process. “We’ll continue to improve our internal environmental management auditing program as well.”

A third-party ISO registrar also conducted an extensive on-site assessment of Fletcher Mine and Mill operations over several days. This included interviews with the site’s leadership team, specific employees and external contractors to assess their awareness of and conformance with ISO 14001 requirements. Fletcher Mine and Mill must complete annual third-party registrar checks to maintain certification, confirming the site’s ongoing use of the environmental management system and validating its progress toward the established targets.

In addition, Doe Run’s Metals Division, which includes the Resource Recycling facility and the company’s refinery, strip mill, and alloying and casting operations in Herculaneum, Missouri, achieved recertification for the ISO 9001:2008 quality management systems standard. Working to maintain this certification supports Doe Run’s commitment to consistently provide products that meet customer needs and regulatory requirements, as well as implementing processes for continual improvement.
