ST. LOUIS, MO (May 15, 2023) — The Doe Run Company’s (Doe Run) Maroon mine rescue team was awarded first place overall at the 2023 Southwestern Regional Mine Rescue Contest in Ruidoso, New Mexico, on April 13. Their achievement capped off multiple awards, including first place on the Mine Rescue Field, second place in Bench Technician and fourth place in First Aid.

Doe Run’s Maroon team competed alongside five other rescue teams from New Mexico and Wyoming. Three of those teams were previous national champions. The competition consisted of two days of separate Mine Rescue Field problems: simulating underground emergency situations, a first aid competition with a CPR and first-responder scenario, and a team technician competition to test technical troubleshooting of mine rescue equipment. Each event also included a written test to assess the team’s knowledge. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) judged the event.

“Our success at the competition was accomplished by teamwork,” said Andrew Hampton, captain of Doe Run’s Maroon team and instrument tech at Doe Run’s Fletcher Mine and Mill. “Each team member is dedicated to their roll and dedicated to the aid of fellow miners. With the support of our company’s leadership and the invaluable experience shared by our fellow team members, we’re more than ready to step up and assist our colleagues whenever the need arises.”

In addition, Doe Run’s Gray mine rescue team competed against 16 teams from all over the country at the 2023 Southern Regional Mine Rescue Contest in New Iberia, Louisiana on May 4. Their achievements include second place in First Aid, second place in Team Technician and fourth place on the Mine Rescue Field.

Doe Run’s mine rescue teams train on a voluntary basis and compete in mine rescue competitions annually. The teams consistently place near or at the top at regional and national mine rescue competitions.

“Through intense training and competing in high-pressure scenarios, our mine rescue teams are honing their skills to work together effectively in a real-life crisis.” said Kevin James, environmental health and safety manager at Doe Run. “These competitions are crucial for our teams to stay prepared and equipped to handle any situation that comes their way.”

Doe Run’s focus on safety is evident beyond mine rescue. Across the company, Doe Run employees completed more than 37,000 hours of training in 2022, including health and safety training. Several sites have gone years without a lost-time accident, including Sweetwater Mill reaching 26 consecutive years with no lost-time accidents; Brushy Creek Mill (17 years); and Buick Mill (12 years). In addition, the Sweetwater Mine surface team has reached 19 years with no lost-time accidents.
