Doe Run’s Genevieve Sutton Inducted to Missouri S&T Mines and Metallurgy Academy
9 May 2017
ROLLA, Mo. (May 9, 2017) – Genevieve Sutton of Bunker, Missouri, was inducted into the Missouri University of Science and Technology’s (Missouri S&T) prestigious Mines and Metallurgy Academy on April 20, along with 10 other alumni. Sutton has nearly 17 years of experience in the mining and environmental, health and safety (EHS) fields, and is currently an EHS technical supervisor for The Doe Run Company.
The 114-member Mines and Metallurgy Academy serves as an advisory board to Missouri S&T departments that make up the historic School of Mines and Metallurgy. It consists of alumni with distinguished careers in the mining, exploration, petroleum, metals or materials industry who meet twice a year to acknowledge exemplary graduating seniors and distinguished faculty, discuss changes to the university, and advise the university on the skills and knowledge students need to successfully enter the extractive or materials workforce.
“Mining is a unique global industry that is in constant change,” said Sutton. “There have been a lot of regulatory and technological changes in the last 20 years. We need to prepare students to be ready to adopt new technologies and adapt to changes. The demand for mined resources is growing, and the number of students entering mining is shrinking, so it’s really important to bring in new leaders for the industry.”
Employment in occupations related to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) is projected to grow to more than 9 million between 2012 and 2022, faster than most other occupations. In some cases, there will be more jobs than eligible employees. The mining industry estimates 50,000 new employees will be needed to meet a shortage of skilled mine workers as the result of retiring employees over the next several years.
“Engaging our alumni who are working in the field helps us better prepare our students for their careers,” said Gregory Skannal, outgoing chair of the Mines and Metallurgy Academy. “We have so many alumni who epitomize industrial and civic leadership of the highest repute. They are working with new technologies and regulations, and are the best source on the skills and knowledge required in their industries.”
In addition to her new participation with the Mines and Metallurgy Academy, Sutton is part of a team of several Doe Run employees charged with managing Doe Run’s ongoing partnership with Missouri S&T to provide funding and resources to support students pursuing degrees in mining and STEM fields. Funding from Doe Run has helped build the recently completed Kennedy Mine Building on campus, and provide equipment and tools for students to practice skills they will need in the industry.
“I want to encourage students to train to be part of such a close-knit industry, where they will have connections all over the world,” said Sutton. “It’s really unique to be in an industry that combines technology and good old-fashioned hard work, and I’m honored to join an academy made up of so many other alumni who have given back to the university.”
Sutton has a special personal relationship with Missouri S&T as well. Both she and her husband studied mining engineering at Missouri S&T and were the first couple to be married in the Missouri S&T Experimental Mine in Rolla.
