Donation Supports Herculaneum’s Tree City USA Designation

HERCULANEUM, Mo. (April 13, 2015) – The Doe Run Company (Doe Run) donated 12 trees to the city of Herculaneum, Missouri, in honor of Arbor Day 2015, which will be celebrated this year on April 24. The trees, selected in partnership with the Herculaneum Tree Committee, are native to Missouri and include six red maple, four bald cypress and two hackberry trees.

The trees will provide additional foliage this spring and summer to the north side of Broadway Avenue and the area near the boat ramp in Bates Park. The tree donation also supports Herculaneum’s Tree City USA designation.

“Over the next few years, we will provide dozens of trees to replace some that were removed as part of remediation of our Herculaneum facility. The removal of the trees was necessary to prepare the site for future uses,” said Gary Hughes, general manager, Doe Run Metals Division. “We’re proud that, as a long-time Herculaneum community member, we’ve been able to support the city in its Tree City USA program – from donating 100 of the 200 trees planted in 2008 – to donating an additional tree each Arbor Day since 2009.”

Herculaneum earned its status as a Tree City USA in 2008. This year marks the city’s eight year receiving the designation. The Tree City USA program provides a framework for American cities and towns for forestry management within their community. There are more than 3,400 Tree City USA communities. Communities must meet four core standards to achieve Tree City USA status, including:

  • Maintaining a tree board or department.
  • Establishing a community Tree Care Ordinance.
  • Spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry.
  • Celebrating an Arbor Day Observance.

The city will host its Arbor Day Observance on Thursday, April 24. The 9th Annual Arbor Day Celebration will be held at 1 p.m. in the Herculaneum City Park. Sponsored by the City of Herculaneum and Herculaneum Today & Tomorrow, the annual ceremony will include a presentation of the Tree City USA award, music and readings by students from Herculaneum High School, and an award presentation for winners of the Arbor Day Poster Contest. A reception with hot dogs, cake and punch will follow the ceremony.
