Doe Run Shares Latest Sustainability Report and New Website
13 Dec 2018
The Doe Run Company (Doe Run) released its most recent sustainability report, available at sustainability.doerun.com. As a privately held company, Doe Run chooses to report on its commitments annually as one way to keep its communities informed of the company’s performance and future outlook.
“In 2017, we added back jobs and capital projects that had been reduced due to low lead prices in past years,” said Jerry Pyatt, Doe Run president and CEO. “This also enabled us to expand our exploration and underground mine development. We now employ more than 1,200 people who help us meet global demand for our lead, copper and zinc.”
Hiring continues to be a primary focus for Doe Run, particularly as many long-time employees reach retirement age. The company is actively recruiting for a number of jobs, including engineers, maintenance workers, safety specialists and supervisory roles. This is a key objective of Doe Run’s new website – to help people better understand career opportunities locally and in the mining industry.
“Doe Run is a major employer in southeast Missouri, and we have heard from our neighbors that they want their children to have the ability to get a good job close to home. That’s why we are investing heavily in our area’s future workforce through education,” said Pyatt. “Supporting science, technology, engineering and math programs at local schools and colleges exposes students to skills that are critical for their future careers – whether at Doe Run or elsewhere.”
The report and website also provide updates on Doe Run’s efforts throughout 2017 and beyond to meet its commitments to workforce safety, environmental stewardship and the community, including:
- Received its 28th Sentinels of Safety Award, the highest national award for mine safety.
- Awarded nine scholarships to students at the University of Missouri S&T, Mineral Area College and Southwest Baptist College.
- Completed the fifth and final water treatment plant at its mines, a $73 million total investment.
- Spent more than $57 million on environmental projects and remediating historic properties.
- Spent $172 million with 744 Missouri vendors in 2017.
Doe Run’s ninth sustainability report contains Standard Disclosures from the world’s most widely used sustainability reporting framework – the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The company invites readers to share their views on the report and what they are most interested in through an online survey available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GR8YSMB.
