Doe Run Company Completes Port Property Sale in Herculaneum
11 May 2016
HERCULANEUM, Mo. (May 11, 2016) – The Doe Run Company (Doe Run) has completed the sale of 18 acres of riverfront property to Riverview Commerce Park, LLC (RCP) as part of the repurposing plan for the company’s former smelter site in Herculaneum, Missouri. RCP has been operating a Mississippi River port at the site since September 2013, and is working on expanding operations with a second loading dock area that is anticipated to be operational in the third quarter of 2016.
“When we announced the impending closure of our Herculaneum smelter in 2012, we introduced our plans to repurpose the site and its valuable infrastructure,” said Chris Neaville, Doe Run’s asset development director. “It has been our intention from the beginning to create a site conducive to generating new economic value for the city of Herculaneum and Jefferson County.”
“Great effort has gone into the establishment of a port in Jefferson County,” said Missouri State Senator Paul Wieland, District 22. “I see this as a first great step towards realizing the vision of returning economic vibrancy to sites once occupied by a strong industrial base that employed generations of Jefferson County residents.”
“What makes this property valuable for Herculaneum and our region from a commercial standpoint is access to infrastructure – the river, railroads and highways,” said Herculaneum Mayor Bill Haggard. “The property is perfectly suited for bulk cargo along the river, as well as off-loading or on-loading materials and goods for highway or rail. We are pleased to have the RCP port as a first step in repurposing this area.”
The Herculaneum port currently ships locally sourced sand to oil and natural gas producers across the U.S. The 18-acre site includes a loading dock on the river, restored rail lines and a new barge fleet staging area just south of the new Mississippi River shipping dock. RCP operates and leases the barge fleet from the Jefferson County Port Authority.
“Over the last two years, RCP has made a substantial investment into the port property,” said Mark Denton, project manager for RCP. “The shipping operations surpassed our expectations for its first two years. Now, with the materials staging area put in place earlier and a second dock set to go into service by midsummer, we are now in a position to double our capacity. The second dock also gives us the ability to not only load, but also unload various bulk materials.”
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources Voluntary Cleanup Program and EPA Region 7 provided oversight of the remediation, which included installing a three-foot thick cap layer of soil and rock across the property, and allows for the port expansion. RCP has submitted the completion report for the site to MNDR and is awaiting their final approval for the work.
Doe Run continues to operate its refinery and strip mill, and lead metal alloying and casting operations at Herculaneum. The company’s Resource Recycling facility in Boss, Missouri, also produces premium secondary lead metal from recycled lead.
