HERCULANEUM, Mo. (April 11, 2018) – In celebration of Arbor Day, The Doe Run Company (Doe Run) will donate $5,000 for tree planting in Herculaneum, Missouri. 2018 marks Herculaneum’s 11th year as a Tree City USA designee, and the 11th year Doe Run has donated trees to the city.

An Arbor Day and Tree City USA Celebration will take place at Herculaneum City Park on April 20 at 1 p.m. The event will include a tree planting and dedication, the annual Arbor Day Proclamation, and music and readings by Herculaneum High School students.

“For more than a decade, Doe Run’s generous donations have boosted Herculaneum’s ecosystem and helped maintain our community’s natural beauty with trees native to our region,” said Jim Kasten, Herculaneum city administrator. “As a proud Tree City USA designee, we will plant about 20 trees throughout the community in 2018.”

Trees must be continuously planted and cultivated to sustain the natural environment, especially in high-traffic city landscapes. A tree in Missouri’s rural forests can live up to 150 years, but that lifespan is reduced to 25 to 50 years in a high traffic area.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), Missouri is home to more than 14 million acres of forest land, making it the seventh most forested state in the northeastern region of the United States. Trees prevent erosion, supply oxygen and filter carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. A tree can absorb as much as 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year. MDC experts offer landowners recommendations about the proper planting and care of trees on their property free of charge. Visit http://www.mdc.mo.gov/your-property for more information.
