Lead Batteries Power Summer Fun
21 Jun 2022
ST. LOUIS (June 21, 2022) – As we officially welcome summer and continue to enjoy National Camping Month, it is the perfect time to have fun powered by the lead battery.
When you are packing for vacation or exploring a new place, chances are you are not thinking about lead batteries. However, they are supporting your ability to not only get to your destination but also to power up the fun. Nearly all the lead produced from The Doe Run Company’s mines and lead recycling plant makes its way into new lead batteries that have a 99% recycle rate. So even when the battery reaches the end of its life, the lead contained in it can be infinitely recycled to power travel and fun over and over again.
Since the pandemic began, families have been taking to the great outdoors more often for boating, hiking and camping. In 2021 alone, new RV and camper sales increased almost 40%, according to the RV Industry Association. Additionally, the National Marine Manufacturers Association reported that new powerboat sales had their second highest sales year since 2007. Powerboats rely on lead batteries to start, while RVs use them to keep the lights on and small appliances running when not connected to electricity.
Even after your battery dies, its fun isn’t over. Lead batteries are the most recycled consumer product (99% recycled). According to Battery Council International, the lead battery’s three main components lead, plastic and electrolytes are all recyclable. Each year, Doe Run’s Resource Recycling facility recycles approximately 8.5 million lead batteries and other lead-bearing material, playing a vital role in keeping lead batteries from becoming waste and putting valuable lead metal back to work. Resource Recycling is one of the largest single-site lead recycling facilities in the world, making it an essential link in the modern, closed-loop recycling system.
