Doe Run MINE RESCUE TEAM SETS RECORD IN ROLLA, MO

Maroon Team and Gray Team take first and third; Individuals also excel

ST. LOUIS (October 12, 2009) – Success comes from proper preparation and flawless execution. A mine rescue team from The Doe Run Company, referred to as the Maroon Team, successfully captured the Best in State title for a record fourth consecutive year during the 27th annual Southeast Missouri Mine Rescue Contest at Missouri University of Science & Technology (MS&T) in Rolla. In addition, Doe Run’s Gray Team took third place and several individuals also earned awards.

The Doe Run teams that participated in the contest, held Sept. 29 to Oct. 1, demonstrated their preparation and skills in convincing fashion, displaying their prowess in mine rescue techniques and improving upon their history of success in mine rescue competitions.

“We are proud of the results our teams earned, but even more impressed with their dedication to the safety of their fellow employees,” said Denis Murphy, safety and environmental manager with Doe Run. “The ultimate test of these skills comes if the contest scenarios ever become real. Part of our program is to prepare our employees to anticipate and correct potential emergency situations.”

The competition, sponsored by the U.S. Mine Safety & Health Administration, Missouri Mine Rescue Association and MS&T, featured 15 teams from five states. This event is one of several around the country that Doe Run participates in every year to challenge mine rescue team members’ abilities in different aspects of mine safety.

Doe Run’s accomplishments were unprecedented, both in terms of their teams’ results and the history of the competition. Placing first and third marked the best combined finish for the two teams. This was also the fourth consecutive year the Maroon Team won the event, which has never happened in the history of the event.

“Our teams are made up of very talented individuals who are dedicated to their craft and willing to spend time outside of work preparing for competitions like this one,” added Murphy. “It is a great honor for us to have such talented people working in our mines and on our teams.”
